Case Studies - Data Management

Project: Well Inventory and Lithological/Geophysical Maintenance Application (WILMA)

Client: South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD)

Objectives: SFMWDCaseHistory1.jpg

  • Build a data pipeline between the ASCII data files from the Florida Geological Survey (FGS) and the Oracle database, WILMA.
  • Provide a dynamic, graphical representation of WILMA data via VIEWLOG.

Outcomes:

  • FGS well data, previously available only in ASCII format, can now be plotted on a map and incorporated into the geologic model.
  • Digitized Log ASCII standard (LAS) files were batch-loaded via VIEWLOG into a database.

Key Aspects:

  • A software tool was created that will reformat and perform quality checks on FGS ASCII data files that represent each of the counties within the District.  The software tool will then upload the data into the Oracle-based WILMA database.
  • VIEWLOG was used to map well-point coverate to locate the data spatially and to facilitate the analyses, interpretation and presentation of the data.

Project Description:

The SFWMD uses data from a number of different sources to manage groundwater resources in its jurisdiction.  WILMA will eventually interconnect a number of data sources, such as information from the USGS, FGS and US Army Corps of Engineers, along with information presently managed in other District databases.  The data comprise well locations and construction details, water levels and chemistry, lithology and geophysical logs.

EarthFX has developed and customized software specifically for the SFWMD to take data that was previously in a format inefficient for interpretation and storage to a format that can be used very dynamically and graphically.
